GRUNDOMAT at Legoland Windsor Theme Park in England
UK specialist piling and foundation contractor Optima Foundations Ltd were recently employed by Legoland Windsor (Berkshire, UK) to install 45 No. 150mm diameters steel cased driven piles off which Lego models were constructed.
The works were part of the redevelopment of the Fairytale Brook (one of the original rides in the park). Access to the areas of piling was very awkward as the models were to be constructed in various locations around a gentle flowing river boat type ride set within a wooded area.
The GRUNDOMAT soil displacement hammer was ideally suited for the scheme as the machine could be moved by hand around the wooded area between existing model locations and around the ride trench which had been emptied of water. The soil conditions were loose made up ground from the construction of the ride overlying London clays at about 4m bgl.
It took the Optima crew three weeks to install the 45 rods to a 3 m depth.
